Bienvenido a New Eyes!

Welcome, readers, to Neweyes.tumblr.com. I am a sophomore social work major at James Madison University, in Harrisonburg, Virginia, USA. Inspired by National Public Radio’s “This I Believe” program, my SOWK 288 class is formulating our own “This I Believe” statements and creating action goals to carry out our statements this semester. I mentally kicked around ideas for a few days, trying to get to my core beliefs. First was my favorite brand motto, that of apparel and feel-good company Life is Good (LIG): “Do what you like. Like what you do.” Encouraged by my professor to step beyond that statement, to find a personal passion and explore it, I realized that I believe strongly in female rights. I also believe in picking a cause and using your medium (whether it’s voice, art or, in my case, web blogging) to be an advocate. I also believe that the majority of citizens of the United States of America are undereducated about world issues. Whether this is a result of our relative geographical isolation or ignorance or other factors, I believe that citizens of the western world (specifically the United States) need to open their eyes to the realities of the globe and become well-educated global citizens. I intend for this blog to be a window linking one’s worldview to present-day issues.
